About Ofsted

The Office for Standards in Education’s (Ofsted) purpose is to inspect and regulate to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people, and in education and skills for learners of all ages. Inspections are carried out under section 5 of the Eduction Act, on a three year cycle.

An inspection is the process of evidence gathering in order to provide an assessment of how well a school is performing. The school’s self-evaluation provides the starting point for inspectors, and the views of pupils, parents and other stakeholders are taken into account. Inspections result in a written report indicating one of four grades: outstanding, good, satisfactory or inadequate.
