Multi-Ethnic Achievement

The Multi-Ethnic Achievement Department is a very busy department which supports students and their parents/carers in various ways. For beginners in English we run PSHE language classes, Learning Support at KS4, after-school clubs, reading in registration as well as supporting in mainstream classes. For students who are potentially G+T, there is the Feed Your Mind & Body Club. At KS5, a community-based, oral history project, Sharing Our Stories, helps to extend the most able from the different ethnic groups.

We are proud to add our Community Mentoring programme as one of the strategies to raise achievement at VHS. The Mentors are recruited from a range of local communities to represent the make-up of the school population. All Mentors gain qualifications accredited by NOCN. Our Community Mentoring programme has met the rigorous National Standards awarded by the Government and we are now an Approved Provider.

We have many strategies to encourage parents to become more involved in their children’s learning including coffee mornings and newsletters. A recent project introduced has been a drop-in hour to offer parents/carers and students, originally from overseas, advice on personal matters such as housing, immigration status and benefits.
