Years 7, 8 and 9
Assessments are used to gauge a student's current learning and understanding, and help identify the support they need to move their learning and progress forwards. We have designed a new progress map system for assessment at KS3. Progress Maps will replace the existing system of key stage three assessment. The progress map system identifies what is expected of each student at each stage of their learning. A progress map is based on the idea of the progression of knowledge and skills within each subject. A series of progress level thresholds, within each progress map are used to measure and report on student progress. These thresholds relate to subject specific knowledge and skills acquired in Years 7, 8 and 9.
Each of the 5 progress thresholds with a definition of the stage have been shown below. We identify secure as meeting expectations and then identify those who have gone beyond this or are still working towards this secure understanding of the Key Stage 3 curriculum.
Progress Level Threshold |
Level Descriptor |
Exceptional |
This student has mastered a comprehensive understanding of and retained the knowledge and skills delivered in this phase of the curriculum. |
Advanced |
This student has a strong understanding of and retained the majority of the knowledge and skills delivered in this phase of the curriculum. |
Secure |
This student has a secure understanding of and retained a sufficient amount of the knowledge and skills delivered in this phase of the curriculum. |
Developing |
This student has a developing understanding of and retained some of the fundamental knowledge and skills delivered in this phase of the curriculum. |
Foundation |
This student is begun to explore and has retained a limited amount of the knowledge and skills delivered in this phase of the curriculum. |
The aspirations are to aim high and to encourage students to work hard to achieve exceptional knowledge of the curriculum and application of skills. Students who are meeting their target threshold consistently are making expected progress. Therefore, if your child has the target threshold of secure, and they achieve this threshold in year 7, 8 and 9 they are making expected progress. The skills and knowledge that are required for each threshold across each assessment point increase in challenge over time. For example, the knowledge and skills required to meet the secure level would get more challenging as a student moves from Year 7, to Year 8 and onto Year 9.
The following table shows how progression works as the students move throughout Key stage 3.
